The initials GT are often associated with sports cars or other competition vehicles. GT bikes certainly are sporty and have even been used by the professional teams Lotto and Jelly Belly, but the GT acronym has no such meaning, simply being the fortunate initials of the company founder Gary Turner.
Beginning in the bike business in 1979, Gary Turner started out handmaking BMX racing frames for the sport which was going through the roof at the time. This initial interest in competition bikes, the innovation that followed and the continual need for quality materials and workmanship became a company mind set. A mind set that virtually became company policy as the range of GT bikes on offer expanded to include Mountain Bikes, Family Bikes and Road Bikes.
The GT road bikes of today are mostly carbon or aluminium and offer a nice alternative for new bike buyers many of who maybe took to the dirt jumps on a GT BMX in their younger days.
