Wilier, like Colnago and Pinarello is part of a long, proud and succesful Italian cycling tradition, with its headquarters situated not far out of Bassano del Grappa in the heartland of bike building in the north of Italy. Wilier began business back in 1906 and has been producing high quality bicycles since that time especially after experiencing a major renaissance in the post World War 2 period where 300 staff were producing a staggering 200 bikes per day.
From this period in the late 1940's Wilier were always interested in collaboration with professional riders, reaping the reward of their experiences under extreme competition and also benefitting from the publicity gained from being associated with the stars of the sport. In the modern era Wilier has continued to sponsor elite professional teams providing some of the sports biggest stars innovative cutting edge machinery to carry them to many important victories.
The legendary Italian mountain climber Marco Pantani rose to prominence aboard an aluminium framed Wilier, dominating many mountainous stages of the great grand tours. Pantani's exploits and the resultant publicity are so valued and revered by Wilier that his bike is still on display in their showroom nearly 15 years later. More recently the Italian ProTour team Lampre has used Wilier bikes with many outstanding successes proving that the current crop of bikes are up to the task no matter whether it is Alessandro Ballan and Damiano Cunego finishing 1st and 2nd in the World Road Championship or super sprinter Alessandro Pettachi winning stages of the Tour de France and Giro d Italia.
Wilier's involvement with athletes of this calibre has seen a continual evolution of frame design. Responding to the athletes needs and experiences with the use of modern materials, and by utilising high tech equipment to carry out extensive frame testing in house as part of their day to day manufacturing process, Wilier has ensured their riders have an edge over their competitors.
Of course with Italian design, whether it be for cars or clothing or bikes, the aesthetic appeal is considered equally as important as functionality and of course Wilier bikes are renown as being amongst the most beautiful available.
