Lots of bikes have a pretty similar appearance, but if you delve a little further, sometimes you find some small differences. Small differences, especially when it comes to frame geometry specifications that can change certain characteristics of the bike, as it is these angles and dimensions that effect the way the bike performs and the quality of the ride experienced by the rider. Giant offer two styles of bike in their road range, the TCR aimed at the serious racer, or the more competitive style of rider where comfort is appreciated but is not the prime motivator when choosing a bike, and the Defy which is aimed at the endurance or sport rider. A rider that has his comfort as a priority, perhaps because of injury or age, and is prepared to run 2nd in any wind tunnel testing. A rider who would prefer to sit up a little straighter and have the ability to look around a little more, not be hunched over the handlebars. Many models even have a similar name. Defy, Defy Composite, Defy Advanced, Defy Advanced SL are all different variations of a theme and although sharing exactly the same recreational style inspired geometry (Defy) they are vastly different in their construction. The materials used in each of the four is the first point of difference with the standard Defy being aluminium, next the Composite frame created from T-600, while the Advanced is made from T-700 and the Advanced SL from the highest performance T-800. The method of construction varies from model to model too, ensuring that not only does the Advanced SL frame end up lighter than its stablemates (and almost every other frame made) but it also gets stronger, stiffer................faster.
Giant Advanced SL Composite Technology
The highest-performance T-800 raw carbon-fiber material is painstakingly woven in Giant’s own composite factory to create the most cutting-edge frames available today. This is the technology used by Giant’s world championship-caliber racers as they compete in the most demanding events on the planet. These frames feature the most advanced engineering and construction methods, including:
Fusion Process: Advanced SL top-tubes are “grafted” to the seat-tube using filament winding and co-molding. This complex process involves hand-weaving the two tubes together, then re-molding the area under heat and high pressure to unify the junction—resulting in a lighter, stronger junction than with traditional molding.
CNT Technology: Carbon Nanotube Technology refers to a microscopic polymer added to Giant’s custom-blended resin. Acting like miniature buttresses, CNT particles strengthen the layers of composite. Frames featuring CNT are 14 percent more impact-resistant than those without it.
Continuous Fiber Technology: This new manufacturing process allows Giant to construct the front triangle of Advanced SL bicycles with larger, and therefore fewer, sections of composite material. With fewer pieces and junctions, the frames are up to 100 grams lighter and significantly stronger.
The 2012 Giant Defy Advanced SL shatters the mold of every composite bike that came before it. Using Advanced SL-grade composite material and breakthrough manufacturing processes the result is the lightest, stiffest road frame ever produced by Giant. Steering precision is boosted by the new oversize OverDrive 2 head-tube / fork combination for the surest most positive feeling front end ever experienced, allowing the rider to attack into corners at high speed with total confidence. The MegaDrive down-tube and PowerCore bottom bracket improve power transfer and efficiency ensuring every single watt of the riders energy is transformed into forward motion.
For most riders, the level of feedback from the bike and the sheer performance will be far superior to anything they have experienced in the past. Even with the comfort of a more relaxed riding position, it will be a revelation and will bring a new excitement to their riding, encouraging them to ride harder, ride longer, ride better....................win more often.
The 2012 Giant Defy Advanced SL 0 is equipped with the latest Dura Ace ensemble from Shimano, featuring precise and easy to use STI levers, 20 speed gear system, compact cranks and powerful dual pivot brakes. Components of the highest quality and light enough to enhance the bike as does the Giant composite seat post, composite handlebar, alloy head stem, P-SLR1 wheels and Fizik Arione saddle. A genuine rocketship, the Advanced SL is capable of handling even more than you can dish out.
