Giant Anthem X Advanced SL 0. 2012
This is a dual suspension bike of the highest possible quality. A veritable collection of the best of the best all assembled together to form the 2012 Giant Anthem Advanced SL 0.
Frame.
Beginning with the frame itself, a masterpiece of innovation and evolution it is an example of the finest work available that current technology allows. The all-new Advanced SL shatters the mould of every composite bike that came before it. Using Advanced SL-grade composite and breakthrough manufacturing processes that result in the lightest, stiffest frame ever produced by Giant. Steering precision is boosted by the new oversize OverDrive 2 headtube/fork combination. The MegaDrive downtube and PowerCore bottom bracket improve power transfer and efficiency. Built to give Giant World Cup pros every advantage, this is quite simply the fastest XC bike ever produced by Giant. We took the world’s best-performing suspension system, Maestro, and mated it with the incredibly lightweight, stiff and sharp-handling Advanced SL-grade composite frame. With the massive MegaDrive downtube, super-stiff PowerCore bottom bracket and all-new OverDrive 2 oversize headtube, you have a complete high-performance system that takes the mountain bike beyond integration.
Suspension
Debuting on the 2012 rear Fox Float RP23 Boost Valve damper is ‘Adaptive Logic’, which adds versatility by combining Fox's terrain-sensitive ProPedal platform damping with an additional, lever-selectable firm lockout. The new RP23 sticks with a two-position lever like on theprevious model but instead of choosing between fully open and "ProPedal on" settings, there's now a dedicated firm setting meant for riding on roads or any other smooth surfaces when a rider wants the least amount of feedback or sensitivity to the terrain and a second, user tunable setting for riding on trails. In essence, the firm setting is analogous to last year's "ProPedal on" with the inner dial set at "3" while the other position can now be set at fully open, ProPedal on-1, or ProPedal on-2. Fox's thinking here is that when riders want a firm setting, they genuinely want it to move as little as possible while when on the dirt, there is a lot of variability in how people want their machines to behave. The RP23 with Adaptive Logic fitted to the Anthem Advanced SL 0 also features a Kashima coating on the upper air sleeve and shock shaft. The slick surface coating fills pores, making moving suspension surfaces noticeably smoother – an attribute that can be felt by cycling a deflated rear shock by hand. The smoothness translates to less stiction and, ultimately, better sensitivity to the terrain.
The Fox Float Terralogic fork also features the Kashima Coat which is not only more durable than the stanchion coating used on competitors forks and previous Fox forks, it also reduces friction. Fox test riders reported better overall traction in the front end and better small bump compliance which is all good news for those who appreciate good suspension. You will notice the Fox Forks that have the Kashima Coated stanchions by the distinctive Gold finish on the upper legs, that not only serves to be super shiny and slippery, but also adds a heavy dose of bling to your steed! The Terralogic fork series has established itself in the XC world as one of the stiffest, plushest and most reliable forks on the racing circuit today. Fox Forks and Fox Shocks have always had a stellar reputation for building some of the best suspension technology, and for 2012 the products just get better. The big news for XC racers and trail riders for the new models is the resurgence of the Terralogic damper. Think of Terralogic as an automatic lockout for your fork; it stays stiff and solid under pedalling and braking, but opens up to plush suspension when you hit a bump. The Terralogic concept is simple; removing any unnecessary 'bobbing' and 'diving' movement from the fork, whilst providing plush suspension as soon as you hit an obstacle - and do it all automatically. On Fox Terralogic forks, there is one adjuster that gives you 15-positions between fully locked out and fully open. Adding the FIT cartridge to the mix makes the new version supremely plush and makes the transition from locked out to plush unnoticeable. For XC racers and trail riders, the Terralogic model is a must-have for those wanting to make their bike as efficient and fast as possible, without the need for lockout levers and remotes. Simple really; locked out when you want it, plush suspension when you want it. Rebound adjustment is all about controlling how slow or fast your fork returns to full travel after hitting an obstacle. Dial the red knob clockwise and the fork slows down, dial the knob anti-clockwise and the fork speeds up in return. Our hot tip at My Mountain is to run the rebound on the slower side than what you might be used to, in order to allow your front tyre to stick to the trail and maintain better traction. Combined with the new FIT cartidge, the gold Kashima Coat stanchions and brand-new SKF fork seals for an even smoother fork action, the Fox Float 100 Terralogic fork is THE XC Trail fork to own!
