Giant may not be the only company to produce a range of recreational/endurance road bikes. But they are the only company to produce them from exactly the same materials, in exactly the same way, with exactly the same attention to detail as the race models. A TCR Advanced frame and a Defy Advanced frame differ only in geometry, with the Defy providing a slightly more upright, more relaxed, more comfortable riding position.
Given that Giant weave their own carbon fibre fabric, then lay it up by hand all in their own facility, quality control is unparallelled and is a prime reason for their ability to produce such exquisitely shaped frames which, apart from looking beautiful, are strong, resilient, light-weight, compliant and a joy to ride. The shape and the dimension of the various segments of the frame are all as result of specific design parameters where rider input is conveyed to the bike with minimal deflection. Push on the pedals and a corresponding torque is applied to the wheel. Lean into a corner and know that the bike will respond accordingly. Simple enough requirements, but goals not attained with such success by many manufacturers.
Targeting the performance minded rider who's riding may vary between the weekly Saturday or Sunday morning blast down Beach Road, may even attend a few club criterium events, will definately be a starter in the Alpine Classic and Around the Bay and might even do a multi day charity ride, the Defy Advanced 2 with its Shimano Ultegra 6700 ensemble is the perfect "weapon of choice".
Traditionally road bikes are engineered with one focus: go as fast as possible from point to point. Everything else goes out the door! This is great if you’re a rider with elite flexibility and a masseuse, but for 99% of us, that speed comes at the price of comfort –which in the end reduces our endurance.
Too many riders who want light, fast bikes have to modify them to get a practical level of comfort. The trouble is this alters the balance and stability of racing bikes, a partial solution at best, and compromising safety at worst. Giant engineers solve the problem by making some minor yet effective changes to the proven TCR race geometry. They devised a formula for a bike to ride all day –or even race- but without being stretched out in an extreme posture.
Easing strain on the back and neck, the top tube is slightly shorter, with a higher head tube. In addition the handlebars have a shallower drop. Complimenting these changes, a 15mm longer wheelbase, combined with just a 1° shallower fork angle give the bike nimble and predictable steering. This makes the Defy much steadier at speed going down hills, while the compact cranks and generous gearing help you on the way up steep ascents. As previously stated, the Defy Advanced series uses the same carbon fibre as Giant’s TCR Advanced series. This material is engineered to give the best transfer of power, yet without an excessively harsh ride. For 2012, the Defy Advanced frames have improved cornering and more efficient acceleration. Also new for 2012 is RideSense, a built in wireless speed and cadence sensor.
Nothing has been overlooked with "quality" being the catch phrase behind every manufacturing process and component selection.
