This year, as in those past, Giant have come up with frames that amazingly, are better than those that were deemed as perfection just 12 or 24 months ago. Not just lighter or stiffer or stronger or better handling or more aerodynamic or better looking, but with all of these benefits, and without any increase in purchase cost. Having total control over your product is no doubt reassuring for those at Giant but equally it is reassuring to Giant dealers and Giant riders as they know that no stone has been left unturned, no short cuts taken, no compromises made, nothing left to chance in the design and manufacture of the current crop of the best bikes available.
Twenty five years of experience in carbon frame production has its benefits, especially from a progressive manufacturer like Giant, where innovation and progression are company policy. Resting on deservedly won laurels is not the Giant way of doing things as can be witnessed by the steady stream of ever improving bicycles year after year. With all their carbon construction "in house" Giant have full control over every phase of production, from the manufacture of the raw materials right through until when the decals are applied and the last clear coat is sprayed on. But their commitment to innovation and perfection starts much earlier, even before the design process, when ideas from designers and engineers and feedback from professional riders of the Rabobank Cycling Team are combined to form the concept of what is the perfect bike.
The 2012 Giant Advanced frames are crafted around a number of design features using lightweight, race proven Advanced composite material. With attention to the optimisation of every aspect of the frames design Giant have come up with a number of features which will benefit every rider, no matter if he is a Beach Road "racer" on a Sunday morning, pinning on a number at the local Criteriums, or racing week long tours in the National Road Series.
Within Giants own composite factory, custom composite material is produced using high performance T-700 raw carbon fibre. This material is hand laid and the front triangle then moulded as a one piece monocoque to produce an extremely lightweight, compliant and yet stiff racing frame. The various tubing shapes and dimensions are all for specific reasons with stunning performance as the end goal. There are some very noticeable shapes in the 2012 frames such as the the rectangular shaped downtube and oversized toptube which work in unison with the oversize headtube to provide superior front end lateral and torsional steering precision and stability for real "point and shoot" type handling. The oversize rectangular downtube combines with the massively oversize bottom bracket and chainstays for further lateral rigidity under pedalling torque meaning none of your valuable effort is lost through frame flex. The overall feel of a 2012 Advanced bike is rock solid, further enhanced by the tapered front fork steerer tube which is supported at the lower end by a massive 1 1/2" diameter bearing and at the top by a 1 1/4" both of which are much bigger and sturdier than the regular 1 1/8" bearings found in most bikes. These larger bearings housed within the oversized head tube and supported by the rectangular downtube and oversize toptube combined with the 1 1/4" headstem and oversize handlebars provides the rider a feeling of confidence and control never previously experienced.
Integrated within the frame is a wireless transmitter which provides data to any ANT+ compatible computer such as the Garmin Edge 800 and the Garmin Edge 500 GPS/cycle computers. This forward thinkling allows for a simpler, cleaner computer fitment.
"Ever dreamed of a road bike with everything-frame, fork, wheels, parts-made to work together? It's no longer just a dream." Sounds a bit like marketing hype, and yes, this phrase is straight out of the Giant manual, but what it isn't, is hype. It is fact. Giant either manufacture themselves or control so much of the design and production of just about every component on the 2012 TCR Advanced bikes except save for the Shimano 105 ensemble. But hey, I think we will all agree the guys at Shimano are on top of their game and have for many years reliably produced and supplied outstanding components for most of the worlds leading bike manufacturers. The result is a range of bikes that are as close to perfect as current technology allows.
With a 20 speed Shimano 105 ensemble, Giant P-SL1 wheels and super stiff oversize handlebars and stem, the TCR Advanced 3 is a rocket, ready for take off. All it needs is for the pilot to step aboard. It's ready! Are you?
