Giant Tcr Composite 1
For years now, the most expensive, fastest bikes have also been the least forgiving. You could choose comfort or speed –it was too much to ask for both. But carbon frames can be designed to give a combination of these two. A premium quality carbon bike gives you more response and acceleration than any other type of frame, with the bonus of a pleasant comfortable ride. But even still, many people mistrust carbon frames. After two decades of technological advances and reliable performances, Giant have been one of the most important companies in establishing carbon fiber as the ideal material for top level bikes.
The key is in the manufacturing process. Giant frames are hand built using over 500 “swatches” of composite material per frame. The Giant facility is so advanced that they actually weave these swatches themselves from carbon thread, each with a particular weave or grain that makes the carbon either very stiff or compliant in a given direction.
The riding characteristics of each frame can be modified simply by laying particular kinds of weaves in different directions or by using more material in an area of greater stress. This is how the Giant engineers have been able to produce a frame that is a careful balance of lateral stiffness, giving maximum performance with all day comfort.
Giant’s TCR Advanced and TCR Advanced SL frames are industry benchmarks. They are tuned with flat-out race pedigree… but their prices have reflected that cutting edge performance. The TCR Composite has a slightly different slant. It was designed to give riders on a limited budget the opportunity to ride a carbon framed bike at under $3,000, without the bike having that slightly sluggish feeling which cheap bikes often suffer from.
Giant have leveraged the research and development invested in the Advanced series frames, to trickle down their industry leading design concepts to create a high level frame at a moderate cost.
The TCR Composite borrows a number of features from its bigger siblings: it incorporates the “Powercore” bottom bracket, effectively a massively wide chainstay and bottom bracket area to prevent flex. It gives outstanding stiffness to efficiently transfer pedaling power rewarding the rider with brilliant acceleration and (nearly!) effortless climbing (if we had a bike that made climbing really effortless we could charge a fortune!).
The handling of the bike through corners is excellent, thanks to Giant’s “Overdrive” system, an oversize headset and steerer tube, to reduce flex under cornering and modified steering geometry. This improves feel for general road riding, leading to much greater rider confidence and because of this, faster cornering. The TCR Composite’s race geometry is not as aggressive as the Advanced series bikes, which means it is less “twitchy” in tight cornering and descending, again improving rider confidence and comfort.
One of the benefits with a manufacturer specializing in carbon frames, and with such massive production, is that the latest technology flows down to the lower echelons, and here is a brilliant example. Many of the features of the TCR Advanced frames are seen here at an affordable price. Come in for a test ride and see for yourself.
