Basically meaning Super Light, this new top of the line Wilier is way more than just that. It is a bike that attracts attention. Wilier have always made bikes that look out-standing, and the Superleggera is certainly no exception. Park it somewhere and it is likely to draw a crowd of onlookers. If you want to stay under the radar, don’t buy a Wilier, and certainly not a Superleggera. One of the outstanding features that draws the crowds is the beautiful weave on the outer carbon surface. Best way to describe it is that it is like snakeskin, with a deep vibrant sheen. It is Bling and people will recognize quality at a glance.
Wilier produce great quality bikes, they are not necessarily the leaders in technology, but they certainly utilize the latest technology to produce some of the best bikes available. This bike is built using an advanced molding process called Lit.
LiT uses highly pressurized silicone bladders to give maximum compression which eliminates imperfections and gives a uniform wall thickness to reduce weight while maintaining maximum strength. This strength is achieved through the use of the highest quality materials, and these latest manufacturing processes. The carbon used in low stress areas is 46 ton high modulus, and 60 ton high modulus in the high stress areas. This high quality carbon has nano-particles of zinc-oxide added to the resin to increase the structural integrity. The whole frame weighs a mere 1220 grams including seat pillar.
Wilier use oversize bottom bracket cups (Campagnolo Ultra Torque) molded into the frame, which allows the use of Campagnolo, Shimano or SRAM cranks with press fit bearings. It is neat and clean looking, and contributes to some of the stiffness in the BB area.
The headset bearing seats are again molded directly into the frame, eliminating the need for additional alloy cups and again saving weight. The frame is a little higher in the head tube area, which allows a slightly less aggressive riding position, which will suit most riders. It is not ideal if you require a long top tube with low handlebar height. But keep in mind this bike has been used to win Tour of Poland, a stage victory in the Tour of Spain and some high level sprints in the Tour De France. It is definitely no slouch, but does it all with a degree of comfort.
The Cento Uno Superleggera really rides well. If you want a quality bike that will perform well in a sprint, has great handling and is rock solid stiff, it has the stats on the board. If you are setting out to race competitively, there are lots of choices out there. This said, most of us require a good all round bike, and cannot afford to have one bike for training, another for racing and another for…………you get the picture. This bike does everything well. Go and try one, you will be impressed, but it may be worth taking a few dollars along, just in case you cant resist.
