A Mountain bike is a bit like the 2 wheel version of a 4 wheel drive vehicle. Originally designed and engineered for harsh off road conditions, mountain bikes have evolved into many various forms, with extras and comfort considerations not originally thought necessary. Another similarity the modern Mountain bike has with a 4 wheel drive is the fact that many of them never actually get to see too much off road action. The benefits of greater control, comfortable seating position and tremendous stability appeal to most people, regardless of where they want to ride.
Most of the mountain bikes we sell are Giant or GT bikes. The 2012 Giant mountain bikes are similar in quality to the 2011 bicycles, but they are generally better looking bikes. This year Giant Australia is using many models from the international range, which will help keep the price down. GT mountain bikes have been around for over 20 years now, and while not really innovative, they are a reliable, proven performer. I know this sounds boring, but they can be relied upon to one of the best mountain bikes on sale. The GT Zaskar range has been winning cross country and downhill mountain bike races for many years (with the help of some brilliant riders), so if you would like a reliable mountain bike GT or Giant bikes are hard to beat.
Both companies have ranges of recreation, cross country and downhill bikes with full suspension, that are both competitive and far less demanding on riders. Giant bikes listed from recreation to performance would run something like this: Trailglide, Boulder, Talon, Anthem, Trance, Reign and Glory. The order is a guide only, beginning with the emphasis on comfort through to a dedicated downhill bike.
A number of Mountain bikes now have both front and rear suspension which are often favoured by more serious riders who have progressed through the various stages and have developed the skill (or bravado) to ride more aggressively. The dual suspension helps the rider maintain control when travelling at speed over rough terrain. But just as there are 4 wheel drives that never get their tyres dirty, there are a number of dual suspension Mountain bikes which rarely venture onto the really rough stuff and are bought purely for the comfortable ride they provide the rider.
