From the wonderful steel frames of the 1970's, such as those that delivered the legendary Eddy Merckx to many wins including his World Hour Record of 49.431km in Mexico City way back in 1972. Come 1996, aluminium and increasingly carbon fibre were the materials of choice and the domination of the great Mapei team began with legends like Franco Ballerini, Paolo Bettini, Stefano Garzelli, Tony Rominger and Johann Musseuw winning most of the worlds greatest races riding Ernesto Colnago's beautiful machines. The new Millenium saw Colnago continue its winning ways with Alessandro Pettachi , Eric Zabel and Oscar Freire crossing the line first more often than any of their competitors.
